Risks Of The Procedure
The procedure of placing a feeding tube is generally considered to be safe, but there are risks associated with all surgical procedures. The patient will be given a consent document that details all possible complications. The patient should discuss these concerns with their surgeon. Patients who have a history of adverse reactions to anesthesia and sedation are more likely to experience complications when a feeding tube is inserted.
A feeding tube insertion can cause pain. There are also other complications that can occur, such as the leakage or stomach contents at the site of the stoma, an infection in the abdominal cavity or at the site of the stoma, or food or liquid aspiration. Other potential complications of feeding tube insertion include blockage, dislodgement, bleeding in other organs damaged during the procedure and infection.
