Living With The Tube
Most patients will initially need a formula designed for their feeding tubes. The formula will be designed with the specific nutritional requirements of the tube in mind. Many patients can make their own formula and blend meals so that they flow through the tube. They must also take care to prevent clogs, and maintain their tube properly. Some people who require a feeding device may be concerned about eating in restaurants or dinner parties. It can be helpful to give a simple explanation if they don’t want to eat. Some people find it beneficial to not draw too much attention and just plug in their pump. You can also ask the restaurant to blend their meals.
Even with a feeding tubes, it is important to stay physically active. Ask your doctor for other exercises that work the abdominal muscles, especially if you are able to run or walk. When they are using a feeding tube, many patients will benefit from getting support from their family members or from a support group.
