Potential Risks
Seat baths have very few side effects. Dizziness, lightheadedness and falls are the most common side effects of sitz baths. These side effects are not caused by the bathwater or bath products themselves, but rather the natural blood vessel dilation which occurs when you spend time in warm water. These side effects are more likely to occur in patients who use sitzbaths soon after a surgery or childbirth. Therefore, someone must always be nearby while a patient is using a sitzbath. Patients may want to take a sitz-bath in a sink or a toilet attachment rather than a bathtub, in order to reduce the risk of falling and dizziness. Standing up from the toilet seat is usually easier than getting out of a bath. If patients experience persistent dizziness or heart palpitations after a sitz-bath, these symptoms should be investigated. A physician should be informed of any increasing pain, swelling, or redness at the treatment area.
