Warning Signs Of Swollen Lymph Nodes

The lymph nodes are tiny structures that can be found throughout the body. The lymphoid nodes, which are round and small, filter wastes, fluids and germs. They also play an important role in the health and function of the immune systems. There are hundreds of nodes throughout the body. However, those that are most visible are the ones located under the jaw, either side of your neck, beneath the armpits and each side of your groin. Lymph nodes usually swell when an infection occurs, such as an ear infection. Swollen lymph glands can be an indicator of cancer, such as leukemia. Swollen lymph nodes can be checked by pressing gently around the node and comparing the feeling with the lymph node opposite.

Tender Or Painful Lymph Nodes

Healthy lymph nodes do not hurt, but swelling can make them painful or tender. Inflammation of the lymph glands, caused by an infection, can cause pain. Patients with painful or tender lymph nodes may experience pain when moving. Individuals with swollen neck lymph nodes may experience pain when eating sticky or hard to chew foods, or while bobbing their heads or turning their heads suddenly. The painful lymph nodes can swell up to the size or a grape or pea. Swollen lymph glands can be painful but they should be soft. Patients should consult their doctor if the nodes become hard or stuck to the skin. may help to relieve pain caused by swollen nodes. A warm compress can be applied to the area.
