Tips For Fasting Safely

Do Not Break A Fast By Feasting

The digestive system is severely affected by breaking a fast with large meals. This can lead to bloating, nausea, and fatigue. In addition, eating after a long fast can slow down weight loss or prevent it altogether. Experts recommend that instead of eating a large meal immediately after breaking a long fast, you gradually introduce food over a period of several hours.

It can be helpful to begin by drinking a small amount of fruit juice, or a smoothie. After thirty minutes, if the person is still feeling good, then they can start eating solid foods. To avoid a spicy food upset stomach, it is recommended to eat bland foods such as toast, cereal or mashed potato. It may be comfortable for patients who have fasted only for a few minutes and did not abstain from food completely to eat the meal they would normally eat on a normal day. If symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain or other symptoms worsen or develop after breaking the fast, patients are advised to consult their doctor prior to trying again.
