6. Play with symmetry
The brain likes a little symmetry but not too much. In order to achieve a sense of balance, compositions that are eye-catching often feature elements in unequal proportions on opposite sides of the frame.
This trick will give your photos a sense that they are organized without being predictable.
In the image above, note how the leading lines connect the whiskey bottles in the group to the glass. Both elements create visual contrast by connecting opposite parts of frame.
7. Keep it simple
Remember that the majority of people who view your photos on social media, such as Instagram or Facebook will be viewing them on small mobile screens.
On a smartphone, a complex composition which looks fantastic in a large wall print can look cluttered and confusing.
It is easier to read your compositions on a smaller screen if you reduce them to just a few elements.
8. Choose the correct orientation for your subject
The recipe for a good landscape photo will not be the same as that for an action shot.
It may seem easy to choose between landscape and portrait orientation (a frame that is wider than tall). But there are some things you should consider before making a decision.
Portrait orientation is the preferred format for iPhone portraits. This format is also appropriate for any time you are shooting a single object.
Portrait orientation works well when you need to focus the attention of the viewer on the subject. Portrait orientation is also the most appropriate choice for full-body photography and fashion photography.
Landscapes are best shot in landscape orientation. You can compose your visual elements more horizontally with this orientation.
The viewer can easily move their focus between the equally important elements of a photo with this orientation.
You should also keep in mind that the requirements of different social media platforms are different. Vertical images are best for Instagram Stories while horizontal photos work better on Twitter. In a moment, we’ll talk more about the recommended sizes for social media images.
