Oceans are not for humans.
It’s cold, dark, and oppressive. There are creatures that can hunt in the darkness and in silence. It’s not until we hear the splash that we realize they have found us. We are taken to the depths before we can react.
This story tells the tale of a lost submarine from the 1990s that was later discovered as part a research project. Researchers can’t resist wishing it had never been discovered when they learn why it was lost.
1. The Night Before
Kelsey Johnson was unable to sleep the night before her operation. She was awakened in her cabin at The Mariner, thinking about all the things that could go wrong. She stared up at the ceiling of her cabin as moonlight glowed with a ghostly light.
Kelsey’s team and she were about to descend to the Arctic Sea bottom in a matter of hours. They expected to find an underwater submarine.
One had been submerged for decades and never surfaced, for reasons that no one could explain.
