May Boost Cognitive Function
The pomegranate may improve cognitive function in both animal and human research. On mice, pomegranate has a neuroprotective affect on the brain. In the study, mice were given pomegranate or sugar water. Those given pomegranate had a faster rate of learning maze tasks and swimming than those who received sugar water. In the hippocampus, mice who received pomegranate drink had a fifty percent lower amyloid buildup and soluble Abeta42. Amyloid and Abeta42 have been linked to Alzheimer’s. Pomegranates have also been found to be helpful in improving memory. Patients who have recently undergone heart surgery often experience memory problems. In a 2013 study, two grams of pomegranate juice extract was found to improve memory retention. A study of 28 adults with memory issues found that consuming an 8-ounce glass of pomegranate fruit juice daily led to significant improvements in verbal memory and visual memory.
