Pomegranate Health Benefits

Reduce Blood Pressure

Several studies have shown that pomegranate is effective at lowering blood pressure. It seems to work best in reducing the systolic number. In a 2013 study, patients with high blood-pressure saw a statistically significant decrease in their systolic readings when they consumed five ounces of pomegranate fruit juice every day for 14 days. In the same year, a similar study followed 13 males with high cholesterol. After fasting for 12 hours, subjects consumed a 5-ounce serving of pomegranate natural juice. The baseline and post-study measurements of blood pressure were taken. Researchers noted that the participants’ systolic readings of blood pressure had decreased on average by seven percent. Diastolic measurements of blood pressure also decreased by six percent. Punicic acid is believed to be the cause of these improvements. Pomegranates can also reduce stress through a reduction in cortisol, which could indirectly lower blood pressure. This fruit contains antioxidants that can improve blood flow, lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.
