Miscellaneous Hacks
1.Use a large carabiner to carry multiple plastic bags. It’s not the weight of the bags that’s a problem, it’s that their handles dig into your hand. Buy a large clip from a sporting goods, hardware or outdoor store. Clip the handles of both bags into the carabiner. Then, you can carry the bag more comfortably by holding the carabiner.
2.Use snack chips to start a fire. Start a campfire by lighting a pile of loose snack chips. Add wood slowly to the fire. Snack chips are made almost entirely of 2 components–hydrocarbons and fats–that burn readily, so you’ll be surprised how quickly and easily they go up in flames.
- Any type of fried snack chips will work, including cheesy tortillas (like Doritos).
- Don’t eat your whole kindling before!
3.Empty sunscreen bottles can be used to hide valuables at the beach. The best choice is a rectangular-shaped bottle with a large, flip-top cap that can be removed. Make sure you clean and dry your bottle completely, removing any oily residue from the inside. Stick your ID, cash and other items in the bottle.
- Your stuff is safe unless there’s a sunscreen thief in the area!
- You can also buy online storage containers that look like actual sunscreen bottles.
4.Make a lantern with your phone and Gatorade or a similar bottle. Light up your phone flashlight and place it so that the light shines straight upward. The shape of the Gatorade will diffuse the light, creating a cool lantern.
- Liquids in light colors (like pale yellow or pale-blue) and full bottles are better than empty ones.
