Cleaning A Neti Pot
Cleaning the neti pot properly every time you use it is essential to using it safely. Like toothbrushes and neti pots, they should never be shared, as certain bacteria may remain in the pot and can be transferred to another person. The exact instructions may vary from one neti pot manufacturer to another, but the general protocol is to clean the pot using antibacterial soap, and then distilled, boiling, or sterile (or boiled) water. The neti pot must be thoroughly cleaned and dried by hand.
It is important to pay special attention to the area where the pot meets with the spout when washing the netipot. This area is prone to salt accumulation. A build-up of salt in the netipot can create a conducive environment for harmful pathogens to grow and spread into the nasal cavity during use. Pathogens colonized in the nasal cavity of an individual can spread to their sinuses and pharynx.
