Corticosteroids
When there is inflammation of the eyelids, blepharitis can occur. Doctors can prescribe corticosteroids for inflammation. Blepharitis can be treated with steroid eye drops or ointments. Eye drops are injected into the eye while ointments can be applied directly to the eyelid. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed simultaneously, depending on the severity of inflammation. Antibiotics can help to clear any bacterial infections. Anti-inflammatory medication will reduce redness, swelling, pain and discomfort.
Corticosteroids mimic cortisol (a major hormone produced by the adrenal glands). They suppress the immune system , which reduces inflammation. A doctor can prescribe a topical medicine that suppresses your immune system more strongly. Oral corticosteroids can be prescribed in addition to topical. They are not often prescribed orally to treat blepharitis.
