May Treat Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness is usually triggered by an oxygen deficiency. It occurs at altitudes above eight thousand feet. This condition can cause headaches, insomnia, fatigue, shortness-of-breath, and an increase in heart rate. In a 2011 review of studies about nitric dioxide and altitude illness, it was reported that patients with altitude sick had lower levels of nitric oxygen than those who didn’t have the condition. In the review, it was noted that Tibetans had nitric-oxide levels at least twice as high as other populations. In a 2015 study, beetroot helps improve endothelial functions at high altitudes. If you plan to travel high up, talk to your doctor about beetroot or other nitrates supplements that can reduce symptoms of altitude illness.
