Promotes Heart Health
Nitric oxide has been shown to promote heart health through several different mechanisms in animal studies. In addition to decreasing blood pressure it also reduces the stiffness in the arteries, and increases blood flow through the carotids. In a 2003 study at Johns Hopkins, nitric dioxide was found to reduce the stickiness and release of inflammatory chemicals in blood platelets. Platelets that are less sticky are less likely than those that are more sticky to form a blood clot , which could lead to a stroke or heart attack. In 2014, a study published examined the effectiveness of supplementing with nitric oxygen in patients who have high blood pressure. The study involved 30 participants, divided into two groups: a treatment and control group. The treatment group was given an oral lozenge which produced nitric oxygen in the body. Patients in the control group were given a placebo. After taking the lozenge, the treatment group showed a decrease of 4 mmHg systolic and 5 mmHg diastolic in blood pressure. Both systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were reduced by six millimeters at the 60-minute mark. After thirty minutes, vascular compliance improved and endothelial functions improved after four. Impaired endothelial functions contribute to hardening the arteries and increasing the risks for stroke and heart attacks. Talk to your doctor if you have heart disease risk factors.
