Guide to Fever-Reducing Medication

Naproxen

Naproxen can be purchased over the counter and on prescription. The majority of patients will require two to three dosages per day. Each dose should contain eight ounces (240 ml) of water. Patients should wait a minimum of ten minutes after taking a dosage before lying down. To reduce the chance of an upset stomach, patients should take this medication with food or milk. Some people may take this medication along with an antacid. This medication can cause dizziness, headaches, heartburn and drowsiness. If these side effects continue or worsen, patients should notify their doctor.

Other less common side effects are easy bruising and painful swallowing. Vision changes and mood changes may also occur. Patients may experience changes in their urine output or a stiff neck that has no obvious cause. These side effects are rare and should be reported to your doctor immediately. Naproxen can interact with many drugs. Lithium, ACE-inhibitors, corticosteroids and diuretics are examples. All medicines should be disclosed to the doctor. During treatment with naproxen, it may be necessary for certain medications to have their doses adjusted.
