Bowel Resection
Patients with colon cancer may be required to undergo an operation called bowel resection. Resection can be used to describe any surgical procedure that involves the removal of organs or tissues. This procedure is aimed at removing the cancerous growth from the large intestine. The cancerous part of the large intestinal tract is removed, as are any lymphoid nodes in the surrounding area. The healthy sections of the large intestinal are then sewn back together after the cancerous section has been removed. The bowel removal to treat colon can be performed by an open resection, where a large abdominal incision is made. It can also be performed using laparoscopy and a small incision with specialized instruments.
