Immunotherapy is a treatment used to influence the immune system of a person with colon cancer to fight off cancerous cells. It is possible that the cells of the patient’s immunity system are unable to identify colon cancer cells, as they produce proteins which allow them to blend into other cells. Immunotherapy disrupts this process of disguise, allowing the immune cells to recognize colon cancer cells. Immunotherapy is used most commonly to treat colon carcinoma. This includes immune checkpoint inhibitors as well as PD-1 and CTLA-4 inhibitors. Immunotherapy, a type of colon cancer treatment, is typically only prescribed to those with an advanced stage of the disease.
