Guide to Colon Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Polypectomy

As part of a patient’s treatment plan, a patient who has colon Polyps and/or precancerous growths may be required to undergo a polypectomy. It is a procedure that involves the removal of polyps or abnormal tissue from an individual’s intestines. This procedure is usually performed in conjunction with a colonoscopy. A colonoscope is inserted into the rectum of the patient by a surgeon. The camera sends a live video feed to a monitor that the surgeon can use for detecting colon polyps. The surgeon will usually remove polyps if they are found to be of concern. The surgeon can use a looped-wire tool to heatly cut off the polyp, depending on the type. The tool cauterizes any remaining tissue or stalk in order to reduce bleeding and speed up the healing process. Polypectomy is used to treat most early-stage colon tumors that are contained in a polyp but have not spread.
