Skill 1 – Personal Hygiene
Personal hygiene is an essential skill for independent adult living. It not only helps them stay healthy, but also boosts self-esteem and their confidence in social situations. By brushing your teeth twice daily, washing your hands regularly and taking a shower or bath every day, you can prevent germs from spreading, which could cause illnesses such as colds. Routines make it easier to do these things over time.
There are adaptive tools available for those with cognitive and physical impairments to help them perform tasks like grooming or brushing their teeth. Long-handled brushes, for example, can be helpful to people who find it difficult to reach certain parts of the body. Other items such as toothbrushes and adapted utensils can help those who have limited dexterity because of arthritis or other conditions. If you need help finding the right solution, it’s best to consult a medical professional.
Personal hygiene is important for physical and mental health. It can increase one’s self-esteem and confidence when socializing. This habit is best developed early in life. However, no matter how old you are, small changes to improve your hygiene will be rewarded in the long run.
