Maria’s reaction was unexpected. She became sad and began to cry, instead of being happy. She didn’t like her eggs breaking. Her mother explained everything as best she could to her daughter, who was too young to fully understand.

Bonny tried explaining, but in vain. Mary was brought inside to care for the kitten. Hans knew that the kitten was in dire need of food, but he had no idea as to what might be in those eggs.
