The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a treasure trove of biodiversity hidden deep inside a mountain in a remote archipelago on the Arctic Ocean. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a massive underground facility carved from permafrost, protected by concrete walls and metal doors. It contains millions of seeds samples from all over the world.

The seeds are stored at -18degC, a freezing temperature. This is to protect against natural disasters and climate change. The vault was designed to be impregnable against virtually any threat – from global pandemics to nuclear war. The vault’s inner sanctuary is off-limits for the public despite its importance. Only a few international scientists and experts are allowed access. Svalbard Global Seed Vault not only is a marvel in engineering and science but also a testament of humanity’s collective duty to protect the planet’s resources for future generations.
