Heard Island in Antarctica
Heard Island, located in the Southern Indian Ocean, is a remote island that has never been inhabited. It is Australia’s only active volcano and home to unique wildlife.
Mawson Research Station, established in 1947, is also located on the island. Its unique biodiversity and environment makes it a place of great scientific value. The island is not open to the general public because of its remote location, and to protect the fragile environment.
