Chia Seeds: Health Benefits

May Reduce Blood Sugar

Some evidence suggests that chia seeds can reduce blood sugar. Further studies are needed to establish a scientific connection. Adding chia seeds to your diet is not harmful, even if you are using other methods to manage blood sugar. Untreated or undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes can cause high blood sugar even after fasting. A high fasting blood sugar level can increase the risk of chronic diseases and heart disease. But chronic blood sugar problems are not the only risk. Researchers have found that temporary blood sugar spikes are also problematic if they occur regularly. Researchers have conducted animal studies that indicate chia seed consumption can improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control, resulting in more stable levels of blood sugar following a meal. Human studies have been conducted on the consumption of chia seed bread. The individuals who consumed the bread were better able to control their blood sugar levels than those who did not.
