Orbital Cellulitis
Cellulitis of the orbit occurs when the soft tissue inside the eye socket becomes infected. The infection can lead to permanent vision loss and life-threatening complications if it is not treated. This condition can affect anyone, but is most common among young children. The infection occurs behind the thin membrane that covers the front of the eyes, also known as the orbital Septum. Cellulitis is the term used when infections develop in front of the septum of the orbital instead of behind. As the infection advances, it can cause severe inflammation which pushes the eyes from their normal place in the socket. Most common symptoms include swelling, pain and protrusion. Other symptoms, such as fatigue, loss of appetite and fever, are also common. The eye could be red, swollen and difficult to open.
