The doctor said, “Rohan we have to talk about something important,” and he was serious. We’ve found something on your ultrasound. Unfortunately, the nature of your finding is still unclear. Rohan was overwhelmed by this news. The doctor said, “W
e do not know what this is, but we must operate immediately.”
What?! Rohan felt shivers run down his spine as the words of the man reverberated in his mind. Rohan was used to the hardships of life, but this was something he never expected.
Dr. Kumar exuded an air of preparedness, ready to fight the unidentified enemy within Rohan. The doctor spoke of an operation as a necessary intervention in order to remove the foreign growth. Rohan’s breathing became erratic and he closed his eyes to allow the reality of his situation to sink in. Was this really happening? Was he prepared to give his life over to this man and let him cut his stomach? Rohan was battling doubts… Dr. Kumar, however, was preparing himself for a daunting task. The universe, however, had a completely different plan.
The time to contemplate was not available. As soon as Rohan signed the consent form, doctors began to prepare an operating room. The doctors returned in a flash to prepare Rohan for his upcoming surgery.
Rohan’s apprehension grew as he was wheeled through the hospital corridors. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the frantic pace in which they hurried through the busy hallways. The onlookers hurriedly made way to clear a path into the operating room.
Under the harsh glare from the overhead lights, the surgical suite looked like a stark, sterile space. The surgical suite echoed with the metallic clattering of surgical instruments and subdued murmurs. Rohan was lying on the operating table, his face a mirror of his inner turmoil. He was a maelstrom filled with fear and anxiety. Nurses rushed around him in a careful, but efficient manner as they prepared to perform an unpredictable operation. Antiseptic stinging his skin made him more aware of the impending uncertainty. He closed his eyes and his mind wandered back to his peaceful pastoral life. The anesthesia began to kick in, and before he even knew it his muscles relaxed.
