Where It Falls Short
Ayurvedic medical practitioners should be aware that traditional medicine cannot be replaced by holistic or natural systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda. Traditional medicine is not able to replace certain situations, such as emergency treatment, bacterial infections and structural problems. It also cannot be used for diagnosing diseases or treating immediate symptoms. Ayurveda also falls short when it comes to mainstream medicine because there is little documentation on the mechanism of actions and active components in their formulations and herbs. Researchers have expressed concerns about the Ayurvedic formulas containing many different herbs that contain active components and bioactive substances. These ingredients may interact in a negative way. Ayurvedic medicines are also known to take several months before they show any changes or results in the symptoms of a patient. Ayurvedic medicine is also known to have a short shelf-life, an unknown purity and a limited availability.
