Your brain has nothing to do with it
Scientists have believed for a long time that the activity of the brain’s left and right hemispheres during development determines whether a person is born left-handed or right-handed. A new study has found that gene expression in the spinal chord determines the dominant hand, even before the motor cortex, the part of our brain that controls movement, is functionally connected to the spine cord. This could be due to environmental factors rather than genetic traits.
A History of the ‘Sinister’
In many cultures left-handed individuals were viewed as unlucky, weak and even evil. The word sinister comes from the Latin for left. Lefties were often associated with witchcraft and the devil in the Middle Ages. Even as recently as the twentieth century, students who were left-handed were made to learn how to use the right hand. In recent years, attitudes towards lefties have improved dramatically.
SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS DOMINATES
In certain sports like boxing, baseball, and tennis, lefties — , also called southpaws, have the advantage over their right-handed counterparts. Righties are less confident in facing lefties because they don’t face them as often. Lefties, on the other hand, are more comfortable with being a minority. They can adapt to their situation better, which gives them an edge.
